EXPRESSING NECESSITY: MUST, HAVE TO, HAVE GOT TO

1) Уншиж ойлгох

MEANING

In their positive form must, have to and need to have a similar meaning.

Must and have to express necessity.

In everyday statements of necessity, have tois used more commonly than must.

I’m looking for Sue. I have to talk her about lunch date tomorrow. I can’t meet her for lunch because I have to go to a business meeting at 1:00.

In the example, the speaker is simply saying, “I need to do this, and I need to do that”

Have tois often used to talk about external obligations and rules, eg.

You have to wear a seat belt.

Must is usually stronger than have to and can indicate urgency or stress importance.

Where’s Sue? I must talk to her right away. I have an urgent message for her.

In the example, the speaker is strongly saying, “This is very important!”

PRESENT or FUTURE	PAST
I have to/ must study tonight.	I had to study last night.

HAVE TO, NEED TO and MUST in the negative:

In their negative form must, have to and need to, the meanings are very different.

Usedon’t/doesn’t have to, don’t need toto say something is not necessary.

Please start eating. You don’t have to wait for me.

Use must not to say something is prohibited (DO NOT DO THIS!). Negative contraction: mustn’t.

You must notlook in the closet. Your birthday present is hidden there.

You must not tell anyone my secret. Do you promise?
