PAST SIMPLE AND PAST PROGRESSIVE

PAST SIMPLE

MEANING

You can use the past simple to talk about things that are in the past and finished.

I work in a travel agency now. Before that I worked in a shop.

She passed her examination because she studied very hard.

We invited them to our party but they decided not to come.

PAST PROGRESSIVE

MEANING

You can use the past progressive to talk about an action thatwas in progress at a time in the past.

I started making the dinner at 5.30 pm.

At 6.00pm I was making the dinner. (point in time = 6.00 pm)
The dinner was ready at 7.00 pm

I left work at 4.00pm.

When you phoned me, I was driving home.  (point in time = when you phoned me)

I got home at 4.20 pm.

Compare the past simple and the past progressive:
I made the dinner yesterday. (talking about a finished action)
At 6 pm yesterday, I was making the dinner. (saying an actionwas in progress at a time in the past)

When she phoned me, I drove home. (She phoned me, and then Idrove home.)

When she phoned me, I was driving home. (She phoned me inthe middle of my journey home.)
